The Talented Mr. Libby

In response to his Chief of Staff's indictment and immediate resignation, Dick Cheny did not flinch. Today's New York Times reports,

Mr. Cheney, who was in Georgia, issued a statement calling Mr. Libby "one of the most capable and talented individuals I have ever known."

According to Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald -- who has been investigating the Bush administration for 22 months in relation to a leak that led to the illegal exposure of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame -- I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby applies his considerable talents to smearing American citizens for speaking their minds. And then he lies about it.

Mr. Libby and Mr. Cheney and Mr. Bush will send over 2000 American men and women to their deaths in a hostile land in order to spread democracy. They will defend the right to speak out, practice freedom, and exercise God's Great Gifts (GGG).

But if you criticize an Administration bent on going to war for unfounded reasons, as Joseph Wilson did, your family and reputation are in serious danger of becoming the focus of hard work and hours of focused calculation in the offices of the Vice President. The VEEP and his staff are going to burn some serious U.S. taxpayer dollars trying to figure out how to make you look very, very bad.

Talk about Homeland Security: if you want to see how domestic terrorism works, just watch as Fitzgerald's proceedings unravel the web of retribution Cheney enacted upon Wilson and his wife.

We've been playing the Plame-Game all summer. Now newspaper readers nationwide will have a reason to study timelines and muddle through the tangled machinations of Bush's overextended war cabal.

What do you think?

Chew the fat; speak out. But beware the VEEP.

Bush a Bully? Nawhhhh!

The friendly smile from the podium. The aw-shucks gallop of the Texan stride. The willingness to shake hands with govenors of states he rarely gives much thought.

The president has always been a man of his people-friends.

Imagine our shock when it was reported in the Daily News that he has been tearing new ones around the WH on a regular basis. What has become of his humble and easy going ways between two-hour work outs on the elliptical?

Bush usually reserves his celebrated temper for senior aides because he knows they can take it. Lately, however, some junior staffers have also faced the boss' wrath.

"This is not some manager at McDonald's chewing out the help," said a source with close ties to the White House when told about these outbursts. "This is the President of the United States, and it's not a pleasant sight."
Is it healthy for a leader to take out his frustrations on the staff that We American Taxpayers (WAT) depend upon? How shameful to belittle the people who perform the nitty gritty tasks required to keep us safe and secure in home, work, and school.

What did Clinton do with his staff?

I am shocked, shocked, to hear that Bush is a bully. The people of France, Germany, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Britain are shocked as well.

Bush does not deal with his troubles by running over people.

Or does he? What scales must tumble from mine eyes? George? Cruel to the little man?

Please cheweth the fat; speaketh out.

Fitzgerald: Indict or Report?

MSM is being honest: We know nothing about what this Fitzgerald chap is finally up to. It has been enormously fun to play the Plame-game, but everyone admits that Fitzgerald has demonstrated such integrity and discretion that all we can do is speculate.

I have myself speculated that Rove and company have guilt dripping from their pores, but that's just me. It's what I do.

But let's boil down what we do know. Fitzgerald is a prosecutor pursuing a criminal case. Nobody has been charged. All that is going on -- so far-- is some people are under investigation and the questioning has been hot and heavy.

The time limit on this investigation is about to end on October 28. Unless Fitzgerald requests an extension, he will wrap up his work before then. There are no indications that he will ask for an extension.

Therefore, within the next several days, he will either announce indictments or close up shop.

Now, some sources suggest that he may file a "report" that divulges some of his findings. But the idea of a "report" by a special prosecutor is not really part of legal precedent.

UPDATE: OCTOBER 21. I was wrong here, when I wrote this part. Apparently, past special prosecutors, under a different legal authority that is no longer in effect, were required to file reports on their findings. According to Yahoo! news services:

Unlike some of his predecessors who operated under a law that has since expired, Fitzgerald is not required to write a final report, so he would not need a Web site for that purpose.

Under most prosecutorial circumstances, if you are not charging somebody with something, it would seem illegal -- if not simply unfair -- to make public the details that you discovered. You cannot publicize details that, in the end, do not amount to anything illegal.

In short, a prosecutor does not normally, on his own initiative, release information on someone unless the prosecutor is making a charge that that someone did something illegal.

I suppose if Congress, within the scope of their own investigation, asked for input, Fitzgerald may be compelled to assist. Or, if the POTUS wants to discover information about his own staff and assure the American people that the country is being run by honest, straightforward workers, then the POTUS could request a report.

But I think it is unlikely that Fitzgerald has plans to put together a report to be made public. Only if he indicts someone will he, on his own accord, release details of his investigation.

That is why he must be so very, very careful. The indictments must have some substance. He cannot overshoot the case. After all, this is the office of the president that is under investigation. The prosecutor cannot make outrageous claims, and there is very little to indicate that he will.

So, to continue the Plame-Game. I think Fitzgerald will pursue relatively small-time charges. Perjury perhaps? Some obstruction of justice (maybe not)? All he needs to do is indict someone, and then he can ask more questions -- and this time they will be answered publicly. He will, in effect, end up exposing the corruption, even if his method of frying the fish does not scorch them.

Chew on that, huh?

And when Cheney resigns (due to health considerations), it will cause a big hullabaloo that will take all the attention off of Scooter and Karl anyway. Cheney is more than willing to execute the big gesture to save the company (he never wanted the job anyway). And it would put Condi into V.P. Which would strengthen her chances at Prez in 2008. So, in the Republican dynasty, it's all good.

You heard it here first, folks. Cheney's resignation will be the perfect distraction, and the Bush cronies will suddenly become tiny.

You simply cannot win with this group. But thank God Fitzgerald is taking a poke at it.

Chew the fat; speak out.

How Long Until Harry Withdraws Herself?

It's the only option, isn't it? How long before Harriet Miers bows out of the process for "personal reasons"?

As everyone is saying, Bush can't withdraw her name without doing serious harm to his honor, etc.

So Miss Harry needs to take the bullet for the team.

Please submit your timeline.

Chew the fat; speak out.

Duke Fatspeak Disappeared.

How Many Spirals Must a President Descend?

How many elements of the Bush presidency are out of control?

False pretenses for war. War crimes for POW abuse. Outing covert CIA agent for political gain. Political party leaders under investigation or indicted. Thousands dead and homeless due to incompetent leaders of disaster agency.

I find it difficult to comment any more. It is like a broken record.

You feel like everyone knows what you're talking about. But you don't see any behavior that suggests that anyone knows what you're talking about.

Democrats complain. Who listens but those who agree?

Has it all come to a blue voice yapping into the abyss?

Chew the fat; speak out.
